Stockholm Design Week: our favourites from the Greenhouse

Each year the Stockholm Greenhouse ups the ante for innovation. This year the depth of quality would have put the main exhibitions at some other so-called design shows to shame. We’ll mention no names but we give the Stockholm Greenhouse 110 percent for design originality.

Highlights here were the design degree students from Turku University (Finland) who took on a theme, “Your Space, My Cube” and turned out a wonderful collection of furniture, textiles and lighting. The Jocular stool by Teea Jäske [email Teea] & Taina Ollikkala and the black and white Luolassa fabric by Anna Uuttu [email Anna] should have no trouble finding a producer. Anna starts an internship with hip Finnish textile brand, FokusFabrik, this summer and Marimekko and Bårastapeter have already declared an interest in Anna’s Luolassa.

An equally promising collection, particularly in furniture design, came from the University of Gotland. Top marks for innovation go to Jonas Axelson who displayed engineering and design talents with his 'Soffan & Matsplatsen' - a sofa that converts into a dining table and benches.

Ironically it was an Irish designer, Colm Keller who could be the first to get his 2008 Greenhouse entry into production. 'Made by Eimear' was one of the prototypes from Gothenburg University’s “Made By Memories” concept. Inspired by his little sister its shape resembles “the posture of a cocky teenager resting against a wall”. Memorable it is.
